William Patrick “Bill” Hovey (59) of Lake Placid, New York, and Gattikon, Switzerland, died Saturday, May 1, 2021, after braving seven months with terminal brain cancer (glioblastoma multiforme).

Bill was a passionate educator who dedicated his life to breaking down the silos in traditional education and leading students on a search for deeper understanding. Never satisfied with a simple recitation of facts, he pushed his students to think creatively, critically, and, above all, independently. Bill's unique multidisciplinary approach to history, paired with his quirky style, enthusiasm, and a true delight in his students, set him apart. Bill was a force of nature in the classroom, and much beloved.
Bill Hovey took his last breath at home in Gattikon, Switzerland, surrounded by family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife Carmen Crenshaw-Hovey and devoted sons Sam and Aleksander Hovey, as well as a vast network of dearly loved extended family, friends, colleagues, and students.
While no funeral service is currently scheduled, celebration of life ceremonies in Lake Placid, NY, and Gattikon, Switzerland, will be announced at a future date. Dear Carmen and family, I am very sorry to hear of Bill's passing on. Bill and I taught together as part of the teaching team at Kennebunk High School many years ago. I retired over 20 years ago but can still remember chatting with Bill about biking to KHS. He was quite a guy.
